Position Overview:
Home health Speech Therapists, or Speech Language Pathologists, provide one-on-one care to patients in their homes to help them with communication, language difficulties, swallowing problems, and cognitive disorders. You will be working independently, but collaborate with other members of the patient's care team, such as RN, Physical Therapist, and other member of our Skilled team. You will be responsible for creating treatment plans that are specific to a patient’s immediate needs. Your work will focus on helping your patients complete daily tasks like eating, performing basic household tasks that involve communicating with family members, and using the phone. It’s all done with the ultimate goal of helping clients achieve independence.

Duties:
- Conducting oral, pharyngeal, and motor breathing exercises
- Helping patients communicate both verbally and nonverbally
- Educating family members
- Conducting structured memory and problem-solving tasks
A typical day for a home care speech pathologist may include helping a non-verbal stroke survivor get familiar with text-to-speech technology… assessing a patient’s swallowing by trialing liquids of different consistencies…and teaching a patient’s husband how to puree foods properly so she can safely eat
Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- Education: Have a master's or doctoral degree in speech-language pathology
- License: Have an active speech-language pathologist (SLP) license in Virginia
- Experience: Have at least two years of speech therapy experience, ideally in home healthcare
- Certifications: Have a certificate of clinical competence in speech from the American Speech and Hearing Association, or have equivalent educational requirements
- Knowledge: Be knowledgeable of state and federal home health regulations
- Other skills: Have good clinical judgment and be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare providers
